How to Make Cannabis Budder

If you’ve heard of cannabis budder, you’re probably pretty well-versed in the world of cannabis concentrates. If you’re new to the genre, then you’ve come to the right place. We’ll break down what cannabis budder is, how it compares to the other concentrates available today, and how you can make your own right at home.

Many people have turned to budder, also known as wax, and other cannabis concentrates because of their high THC concentration, which is exactly what their names mean. These products consist of concentrated THC and other compounds, as well as terpenes that are found in the cannabis plant. Concentrates have grown in popularity for other reasons, though. Concentrates are rather versatile and can be used with all types of implements. They can also be added to all types of edibles, which you can either buy or make yourself.

There are several options in the world of cannabis concentrates, and many of these products function similarly. Budder is becoming quite popular because people have found ways to make it more potent in recent years. Some products even have reached 90% THC concentration.

What Is Cannabis Budder?

Budder is one of the many cannabis concentrates on the market, and it’s better known as wax. Historically, budder did not have a very high THC concentration, at least compared to other similar products. It gets its name from its creamy and slightly yellowish colour that likens it to the actual food, butter.

Budder can be used with a dab rig, vape, and bong, or it can be added to your joints. If you plan to make edibles with budder, you’ll want to use minimal amounts and work your way up because this stuff can be powerful.

One thing people tend to love about budder is that, unlike other cannabis products, this offers a delicious smell, thanks to the terpenes. That can also improve the flavour of the smoke when you inhale

Something that sets budder aside from the rest of the pack is the wide-array of terpenes that are present in these products. Those compounds are part of the cannabis plant, and they give marijuana its distinct aroma and flavour.

Making Budder

Budder is most frequently extracted via CO2 or butane because a chemical solvent is needed to pull the THC out of the cannabis plant, but you don’t have to use that method. Some processes don’t require solvents or tricky equipment, which isn’t for everybody.

Making Solventless Budder

Rosin is one of the best options for do-it-yourself solventless concentrates. If you have a hair straightener in reach, you can make rosin right at home. Fold a piece of parchment paper in half and place your kief or cannabis flower in between the two sides. When the straightener is heated up, place the parchment paper between the two plates and squeeze while holding it over a bowl. The cannabinoids will begin to drip out into the bowl.

Making Budder With Solvents

The process of making budder with solvents is a little more involved. If you’re going to take on this challenge, make sure you do it outdoors.

Butane, propane, and hexane are most often used in making concentrates. Propane is safest, but butane is used most often. You’ll also need the following items:

  • Cannabis that has not been ground or cut
  • Extraction tubes
  • Butane or propane canisters
  • Parchment paper
  • A container for the concentrate
  • Electric heating pad
  • 2 glass bowls (one medium-sized and one larger)

Steps:

  1. Loosely fill your extraction tube with a fresh cannabis flower. Be sure to leave room in the tube for the butane to flow over and around the cannabis. If packed too tightly, not only will there less room for the butane to interact with the surface of the buds, but you also run the risk of unwanted pressure build-up.
  2. In a well-ventilated area, place the medium glass bowl under the tube and attach the solvent nozzle to the hole on top. Slowly release the solvent from the canister and allow it to drip through the buds pulling all the cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and THC with it right into the bowl underneath. This can take between 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. To begin evaporating the unwanted solvent off of the budder, gently place the medium bowl with the extracted solution into the larger one. Very carefully add hot (not boiling!) water between the two bowls, making sure not to overtop the inner, medium bowl with any water. Since butane’s boiling point is around -1 degrees Celsius and propane is a chilly -42 degrees, the hot water surrounding the inner bowl should speed up the evaporation process considerably.
  4. Once it looks as though most of the solvent has evaporated, prepare the heating pad by turning it on and setting it to no hotter than 120 degrees Fahrenheit and set it aside.
  5. Remove the medium bowl from the water and scrape the extract remaining on the bottom onto a sheet of parchment paper. Place the parchment paper and the budder on the heating pad. Continue to monitor the temperature as going above 120 degrees can negatively affect the terpene concentration and alter the flavour. As the remaining solvent is purged, the budder should become more translucent.
  6. Remove your newly-formed budder from the parchment paper and transfer it to your concentrate container.

A note before the closing thoughts: Please keep in mind not only the safety of yourself but also those in your immediate vicinity when handling and working with any of these highly flammable solvents. Good ventilation and awareness are essential because these gasses can be odourless and also heavier-than-air, meaning that they can fall and build up close to the floor, posing an unnoticed and deadly risk of ignition and explosion.

As with anything in this particular culture, always be aware of the legal ramifications of what you attempt. Due to the explosive nature of the solvents, even in countries and states with relaxed marijuana restrictions, manufacturing can be considered a felony on both levels.

Have fun, but be safe!

Closing Thoughts

Most people say the best way to use budder is by dabbing. But if you plan to use it with your vaporizer, keep the temperature to a minimum.

Many cannabis connoisseurs believe the budder is not only the strongest cannabis product on the market, but it’s also one of the purest because of its high terpene content. Try out this method, and you can judge for yourself.
