- Cannabis that has not been ground or cut
- Extraction tubes
- Butane or propane canisters
- Parchment paper
- A container for the concentrate
- Electric heating pad
- 2 glass bowls (one medium-sized and one larger)
Steps:
- Loosely fill your extraction tube with a fresh cannabis flower. Be sure to leave room in the tube for the butane to flow over and around the cannabis. If packed too tightly, not only will there less room for the butane to interact with the surface of the buds, but you also run the risk of unwanted pressure build-up.
- In a well-ventilated area, place the medium glass bowl under the tube and attach the solvent nozzle to the hole on top. Slowly release the solvent from the canister and allow it to drip through the buds pulling all the cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and THC with it right into the bowl underneath. This can take between 5 to 10 minutes.
- To begin evaporating the unwanted solvent off of the budder, gently place the medium bowl with the extracted solution into the larger one. Very carefully add hot (not boiling!) water between the two bowls, making sure not to overtop the inner, medium bowl with any water. Since butane’s boiling point is around -1 degrees Celsius and propane is a chilly -42 degrees, the hot water surrounding the inner bowl should speed up the evaporation process considerably.
- Once it looks as though most of the solvent has evaporated, prepare the heating pad by turning it on and setting it to no hotter than 120 degrees Fahrenheit and set it aside.
- Remove the medium bowl from the water and scrape the extract remaining on the bottom onto a sheet of parchment paper. Place the parchment paper and the budder on the heating pad. Continue to monitor the temperature as going above 120 degrees can negatively affect the terpene concentration and alter the flavour. As the remaining solvent is purged, the budder should become more translucent.
- Remove your newly-formed budder from the parchment paper and transfer it to your concentrate container.
A note before the closing thoughts: Please keep in mind not only the safety of yourself but also those in your immediate vicinity when handling and working with any of these highly flammable solvents. Good ventilation and awareness are essential because these gasses can be odourless and also heavier-than-air, meaning that they can fall and build up close to the floor, posing an unnoticed and deadly risk of ignition and explosion.
