How To Use CBD Oil For Pain?

Many countries are legalizing cannabis and hemp products for medicine. Both plants contain essential cannabinoids, specifically CBD, that are effective healthwise in many ways. If you’re wondering “how to use CBD oil for pain?” then continue reading our guide created by us at Weed Smart.

The growth of the cannabis industry has seen an increase in sales of CBD oil products. So, let’s find out how CBD oil works for pain, the type of pain CBD manages, and how you use CBD to treat pain.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is among the many compounds known as cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Unlike delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), known for its psychoactive effects, CBD has proven therapeutic effects in humans.

The legalization of cannabis for use in medicine results from many medical benefits of CBD, which doesn’t alter the mind – CBD is not psychoactive (it doesn’t produce the high effect usually associated with marijuana.)

How Does CBD Oil Work For Pain?

Drugs, whether artificial or natural, contain compounds influencing how the body functions to achieve the desired results. Our body’s endocannabinoid system  (ECS) uses CBD to relieve pain.

The Endocannabinoid system has three main working components.

  1. Cannabinoid receptors are everywhere within our bodies and have a high presence in the brain.

The Endocannabinoid system produces two cannabinoid receptors.

  • CB1 receptors have a higher presence in the nerves found along the spinal cord and are connected to the brain, known as the central nervous system (CNS). They help coordinate and detect pain, appetite, movement, emotions, memory, and many more functions.
  • CB2 receptors work in the immune system and detect pain and inflammation. The receptors work with nerves inside the CNS and the outer peripheral nerves in other body parts.
  1. Endogenous cannabinoids: These are cannabinoids the body usually produces.
  2. Enzymes facilitate the breakdown of cannabinoids for use.

The natural endocannabinoids in our body function on demand; when your body senses pain or inflammation, the body releases them to bind to cannabinoid receptors. The case is similar whenever the body wants to return to homeostasis, a state of normality after some imbalance.

CBD influences the other components of ECS and doesn’t bid on the receptors.

The CBD compound in cannabis and hemp affects the CNS, PNS, and immune system in many ways; working in conjunction with ECS, it functions as an antioxidant to reduce inflammation and as an analgesic for chronic pain management.

What Types of Pain Does CBD Help With?

While some countries have partially or yet approved CBD for medicinal purposes, Canada approved its cancer pain management.

There has been extensive research on the different types of pain that CBD can manage for the past two decades. Current clinical trials research on CBD suggest CBD oil for pain helps in medical conditions such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and chronic pain management, among others.

However, CBD alone may fail to relieve chronic pain and must be paired with other medications or THC.

Chronic Pain Relief

Chronic pain is any pain that lasts for several months. Studies reveal that CBD, alongside THC, provides pain-relieving effects.

Clinical trials of Sativex, a spray of equal amounts of CBD and THC, show the significant success of the product as an analgesic for pain-related cancer. The use in treating pain in multiple sclerosis has been approved in Canada to treat cancer pain.

Earlier studies on CBD find the compound effective in relieving chronic pain for conditions like multiple sclerosis and spinal injury.

CBD in Neuropathic Pain Treatment

Neuropathic pain results in various injuries or conditions that damage the nervous system. You feel this pain with muscle weakness and numbness, which is sharp or stabbing and comes with a tingling effect.

The common cause of neuropathic pain is multiple sclerosis (MS) diseases. The disease wears off the myelin coating the nerve cells. Many countries have already approved CBD for treating MS after its success in clinical trials.

CBD For Arthritis Pain

Arthritis broadly encompasses dozens of joint conditions and pains. Its symptoms range from joint stiffness, swelling, and pain and may prolong over time.

CBD, a proven pain reliever for other conditions, shows indications of use as an anti-inflammatory drug in animal and human trials. However, the ongoing clinical research for CBD arthritis pain relief is less robust, and much data is unavailable.

In 20006, a controlled trial focusing on patients with rheumatoid arthritis found that CBD helped to subdue pain during movement and rest. The patients also experienced quality sleep when under medication.

Research in 2018 to test the use of topical CBD gel on patients with knee pain related to osteoarthritis found that patients who applied a daily dose of 250 mg CBD for 12 weeks had more improvement than placebo participants.

There is a suggestion by a small 2019 trial that CBD combined with THC may prove effective for patients with fibromyalgia and arthritis, resulting in pain all over the body and fatigue. According to the study, inhaling a single dose of CBD and THC solution works better in fibromyalgia.

CBD Oil for Back Pain

CBD oil is known to control pain directly in the affected area. CBD for back pain can come as a gel for a back massage or be taken in other ways. Spinal injuries cause chronic back pain, and we previously showed how CBD effectively treats such pain.

How To Use CBD Oil For Pain

How To Use CBD Oil For Pain Relief?

There are four basic categories of CBD-infused products available for medicinal use in pain relief.

Ingested CBD

Upon consumption of CBD-infused goodies, just like other foods, they go through the digestive system, and the CBD is metabolized in the liver. The blood absorbs the active ingredients and distributes them to all the other body parts.

There are different ways you can ingest CBD oil for pain relief.

  • Directly as oil drops or capsules or Pure CBD crystalline powder
  • Tinctures (CBD oil infused with alcohol)
  • Indirectly added to food to make edibles, e.g., gummies, cookies, candies, broths, etc.
  • Adding CBD oil to beverages like coffee or chocolate

Sublingual CBD

The method involves placing a few drops of a tincture, CBD oil, or powder pinch under the tongue. You need to hold the content for seconds to allow the bloodstream to absorb the compounds through the mouth’s mucous membranes.

Topical CBD

They are skin products infused with CBD for direct application on affected areas to relieve pain. Topical CBD products come in various forms, including:

  • Lip balms
  • Personal body oils
  • Bath salts
  • Patches
  • Creams
  • Shampoos
  • Suppositories
  • Salves

Inhaling CBD

The CBD compounds are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream through the lungs through inhaling. The method gives a faster kick time by avoiding the digestive system, making it very popular.

You can inhale CBD by vaporizing the oil in a vape pen or adding the product to an e-cigarette. However, there are adverse lung side effects associated with the method.

What To Consider Before and When Using CBD For Pain?

CBD is a drug, and even though they are nonprescription CBD products, it has some side effects and can result in substance abuse. Knowing the correct dosage and taking precautions when using CBD products for pain will help you reap the fruits of the product without the adverse effects.

  1. Consult your doctor to know whether your current medication or condition will work well with CBD.
  2. Read the attached label for dosing instructions.
  3. Start small and increase the dosage gradually to find the correct quantity.
  4. Keep the dosage the same once you ascertain your optimum level.
  5. If CBD inhibits your other body functions or expected behaviour, you can stop, as there are no known withdrawal effects.
