What Happens When You Eat Weed?

Written and Fact Checked by S. Zulfiqar

Capsules, tinctures, smoking, vaping, edibles are the most common ways people consume their weed. As to which is the most popular of them all? Well, that depends on who you ask. However, as legalization continues to sweep the nation and more cultivators deepen their knowledge and create innovations, people are looking for even more ways to consume their weed — and for one method, it’s as simple as it gets — eating raw weed. But can you? The short answer is yes.

While one may believe that smoking is the leading cause of a high feeling (due to the process of combustive smoke, which is typically inhaled into the lungs), the aspect of getting high isn’t exactly missing. In fact, it’s believed that eating raw weed can have a diverse effect different from smoking. So what are weed edibles like?

The Rundown on THC and Acids

Most people know, especially stoners, that weed becomes psychoactive after being heated. Of the 113 cannabinoids that have been identified by scientists in nature, tetrahydrocannabinol, known as THC, is perhaps the most popularly known and well studied of them all — for now, at least.

In its acidic form, it’s called THCa, yet once it undergoes a process of drying and curing called decarboxylation, it changes THCa into its active form THC. Without it, THC remains in its acidic state as THCa — a much different chemical than what you get from vaping or smoking, for example.

Mainly, THCa in its elemental form can be metabolized by the body in large quantities without any real issue, which one would believe leaves little to be concerned about. In other words, weed that gets digested has to enter your bloodstream to get you high, but since it can be a challenge for the body to break down the composition of weed, it doesn’t absorb these acids. Instead, it’ll just pass through the digestive tract and, after that, convert THCa into nutrients it needs by way of your metabolism.

Before we understand what happens to the body after eating weed, we should realize that eating raw weed and decarbed weed are two different things and provide two different outcomes.

What Happens When You Eat Weed

Eating Decarbed Weed

So what happens when you eat dried weed or dried buds? Well, the answers seemed to be mixed but point to these few outcomes:

You feel lightheaded

This is pretty obvious. Too much of anything can make you feel lightheaded and dizzy. For those who are new to cannabis or sensitive to THC, you might compare it to getting the spins from overconsumption or a very potent strain. Even just laying down and you still might not get your head to stop spinning. Bottom line, don’t eat weed if you hate this feeling, which most of us do.

You lose focus

No brainer here — even smoking weed causes this, so it should come as no surprise. Some people don’t understand how powerful the effects of weed can be, which can completely take away your concentration and cause you to mentally drift, and not in a good way.

You panic

Many cannabis consumers panic or “trip”; however, if it’s your first time and try it the “eating weed” way, you will hyperventilate. You’ll start to hear things, your heart will race, and everything will sound like gibberish because you’re too focused on how anxious you are. But then again, even if you’re a seasoned smoker, this can still happen to you, so don’t get all cocky about it because you just might hyperventilate and even hallucinate, just like your average weed newbie consumer.

You get fatigued

Anything weed-related will tire you out. And the worst part? It’s instant. We suppose if you’re looking for a good rest, this might not be such a bad thing. However, if you still haven’t checked that to-do list, consider your day over and out. Just like smoking weed, your eyes are going to be closed shut, and you’ll be off to dreamland in no time.

You get sick

Perhaps the last and worst thing that can happen when eating weed is vomiting. It’s important to understand that this isn’t the same as eating edibles — they are two completely different things. More than likely, you will be sick and vomiting everywhere.

Those Who Want to Eat Raw Weed Without the Effects

So, what about those who want to eat cannabis and not weed? There are many ways; however, they must be fresh buds and leaves; cured or dried won’t do the trick. Some ways include:

What Happens When You Eat Weed

  • Smoothies and shakes: Yea, we suggested this. While we can have a bitter taste, that’s become no problem once you add your own tasty ingredients to the mix. You can combine your drink with whatever you prefer to dilute the flavour and make several customizations — be it fruits, veggies, sweeteners, and more!

  • Juicing: Cannabis leaves and juicing are just now seeing some real traction, so of course, why not hop on the bandwagon and see what all the chatter is about? Using fresh leaves (not nugs, sorry), you’re able to make fresh weed juice perfect for elevating your juicing.

  • Edibles: Chopping up some cannabis leaves into your salad can make a pretty mean green meal mixed in with other fresh greens along with your favourite toppings and dressing. So what kind of high do edibles give you? Well, the same powerful high a nice toke and smoke of THC gives, so buckle up!

Conclusion

There are a number of ways to enjoy weed and also get high thanks to modern technology and an amazing cannabis hybrid vigor from cultivators and growers alike. But, at best, eating weed will offer you nutrients that the body loves without the high.

Yes, there is a lack of a high but weed is versatile and healthy and, not to mention, a more efficient and discreet method of consumption that perhaps, those looking to consume their weed without producing the mind-altering, intoxicating effects. In any case, even if you love weed, don’t let this deter you from trying!
