How To Make Cannabis Syrup

Written and Fact Checked by S. Zulfiqar

With cannabis legalization spreading all over the U.S. it’s no wonder people are looking for fun ways to try weed. With the more availability of diverse weed strains, products, and forms of intake there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy cannabis. One of the latest ways is making your own cannabis simple syrup.

Weed syrup is a discreet and unique way to unwind and relax. One of the great things about cannabis syrup is that it’s versatile. Cannabis maple syrup can be used for breakfast, smoothies, glazed meats, non-alcohol drinks, etc. But what exactly is it and is it safe?

What Is Weed Syrup?

Weed syrup is made by mixing vegetable glycerine with cannabis concentrate or oil in addition to sugar or other sweeteners. Weed syrup is similar to other edibles such as weed brownies but consumers claim that the syrup works a bit quicker than weed brownies. But there is no scientific evidence of this as edibles typically take an hour to kick in.

Weed syrup contains THC, the psychoactive chemical of cannabis. And because it’s taken orally it must be processed by the liver. So, it is a longer-lasting high than smoking cannabis.

If you’re looking to have a “stoned” experience this could be for you. Like with any cannabis edible, you have to be careful and dose your cannabis infusions because depending on the cannabis potency, it can be very hard to dose especially if you’re new to making your own weed-infused edibles.

Is Weed Syrup Safe?

As many users have noted, weed syrup has the same consistency as “lean”. Lean is made with codeine cough syrup, soda, and hard candy. Codeine is a weaker form of opioids but is just as addictive and detrimental to the human body. Weed syrup is not lean.

With that being said, weed syrup is not dangerous in the same way that lean is. But similar to any cannabis product, if too high of a dose is taken, the high will produce unwanted side effects such as paranoia and anxiety.

It’s important to remember that mixing cannabis-infused products with alcohol will potentially leave you feeling anxious or get you too high. Basically, you don’t want to mix cannabis-infused products with alcohol at all. It’s better to start with a low dose until you figure out how much is right for you.

You can purchase bottles of weed syrup in dispensaries in states where cannabis is legal. Though it can be hard to find and a bit pricey. Alternatively, you can make your own in the comfort of your home.

Uses For Weed Syrup

What’s better than a sweet, discreet, and potent edible? One that you can mix into your food in a number of ways. Whether you’re looking to add a little extra kick for a cocktail, breakfast, coffee, or marinades weed syrup is a fun and unique way to shake things up!

Additionally, you can use THC syrup in Canada as a cannabis tincture and take it under the tongue. This form of intake (sublingually) has the potential to make cannabinoids work faster. The benefits of oral ingestion of cannabis-infused products are that it helps muscles relax for quicker pain-relieving, and the longer duration lets you enjoy the euphoric high for longer.

How To  Make Weed Syrup

Ingredients

  • 3 cups water
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp food grade vegetable glycerin
  • 3-7 grams of cannabis flower (depends on desired strength)
  • Liquid flavoring (extract of vanilla, lemon, etc. & optional)

Equipment

  • Cannabis grinder
  • Baking tray
  • Aluminum foil
  • Oven
  • Pot
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Cheesecloth
  • Strainer

The most important part of making any and all edibles is decarboxylating your cannabis. Decarbing is just a fancy scientific term for activating THCA turning it into THC. THC is the cannabinoid molecule that produces euphoric head-high effects. Skipping this step will lead to a much weaker cannabis-infused edible.

Directions

  • Decarb the cannabis: Preheat your oven to 225°F. Cover the baking tray with aluminum foil. Grind the weed just enough but not too finely as it could end up burning in the oven. Evenly spread your cannabis on the baking tray.
  • Carefully place your baking tray in the oven and set a timer for 30-40 minutes. Pro tip: After a 15-20 minute mark, you can lightly smooth out the cannabis on the tray to expose the cannabis surface area equally.
  • After 30-40 minutes it’s now decarbed and ready for use. The decarbed cannabis should be brown but if it’s not, decarb for a couple of minutes longer.
  • Bring the 3 cups of water to a boil and add the 3 cups of sugar. Continue to stir the sugar until it dissolves on low heat.
  • Add the cannabis: Now that the sugar is dissolved, you can add the decarbed cannabis and stir frequently as it boils on low heat for 15-20 minutes. In this step, you have the option to add additional liquid flavoring. Do not let it come to a complete boil as this can damage the THC and other cannabinoids.
  • Add the vegetable glycerin: Lower the heat and add 2 tbsp of vegetable glycerin to the mix. Let the mixture simmer for 7-8 minutes while stirring regularly so the syrup doesn’t get too thick. If the syrup is too thin for your liking, let it simmer for a few more minutes.
  • Strain: Turn off the oven and take the pot of hot syrup off the heat so that it can cool down. Place the cheesecloth over the strainer in a bowl. Pour the warm syrup through the cheesecloth to get rid of the weed bits.

Ta-da, your cannabis syrup is done! Store it in an air-tight jar in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it. Use caution when consuming. Remember to always start with a low dose and go slow. Make sure to shake the jar of weed syrup before every use for maximum consistency.

In Summary

Weed syrup is a great and unique way to unwind and relax. And as always, it’s smart to start with a low dose and go slow as homemade edibles have a reputation for being inconsistent. Take weed syrup responsibly and enjoy! Just make sure to buy your THC syrup from trusted sources such as Weed Delivery Vancouver or order online from dispensaries such as WeedSmart.
